Amber Haslag Graduates from Westminster College

2012 May 22

Amber Haslag of Jefferson City, MO, is a member of the graduating class of 2012 at Westminster College in Fulton, MO.

Haslag earned a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education.

Commencement exercises were held May 5 in Champ Auditorium on the Westminster College campus.

"I want to congratulate the class of 2012 for completing this part of their educational journey," says Westminster President Dr. George B. Forsythe. "The decisions they made, the challenges they faced, the relationships they built and the role models who taught them at Westminster have all prepared them for the successful life that lies ahead of them. They are now ready to take their place as Westminster graduates, making a difference in the world wherever they find themselves."

Commencement speaker for the day was former U.S. Senator John C. Danforth.

"You don't have to be in politics to change the world," Danforth advised the graduates. "You just have to be a good person."

Danforth served in the U.S. Senate from 1976-1994. Previously, he was the Attorney General of Missouri for two terms (1968-1976). President Bush appointed him Special Envoy to the Sudan in 2001 and in 2004 he went there as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, helping to negotiate a peace agreement.

Westminster's Baccalaureate speaker who spoke earlier in the day was Rev. Terry Minchow-Proffitt, father of Hannah, who is a member of the graduating class. After 27 years of pastoral ministry in the St. Louis area, Utah, Maryland and Mississippi, he now pursues a "free range" ministry from his home in Kirkwood, MO.

Following commencement, graduates participated in the historic Columns Ceremony, a Westminster tradition in which seniors walk back through The Columns they first entered on campus as freshmen to return to the world.
