ALD was founded by the Dean of Women, Maria Leonard, at the University of Illinois to recognize academic excellence among freshmen women.

One year earlier, Dean Thomas Arkle Clark had founded Phi Eta Sigma, an honor society to recognize academic excellence among freshmen men.

Both organizations operated separately until 1976 when they both became coeducational in response to Title IX.

The mission of ALD is to "encourage superior academic achievement, to promote intelligent living and a continued high standard of learning and to assist students in recognizing and developing meaningful goals for their unique roles in society."
